Zaré at Fly Trap

I sat down to a cup of tea and the SF Chronicle's Food section about 20 minutes ago and upon opening it up to page 1 saw this article about my friend Hoss Zaré's new restaurant in SoMa. Hoss is a genius of a chef and also one of the sweetest, warmest and most genuine men alive. He has a way of making you feel like you've known each other forever upon first meeting and his food really reflects it. Go try it out!

I love being Asian because...

... it means I have a chance to look this good when I'm older. If you don't know who this is, it's Michelle Yeoh, action movie star. She's 46 years old. FORTY SIX. Must be all those Asian herbal whatever-thingies that these women are using. Note to self: get my hands on some Asian herbal whatever-thingies.

Indie Mart 2008

Confession: I'm so OCD about my planner that I color code different events using highlighters: Yellow for important things to remember (Katie arriving in SF!), Green for workout related stuff (Mission Cliffs at 6:30am), Orange for work (Parea@6pm), and Pink for all things fun (Jessica's Bday party @7:30pm, Esperpento).

As of current the boxes for tonight through Sunday are jampacked with writing and they're all highlighted PINK. Needless to say, I am really looking forward to a sunny weekend of fun with friends in the city. In addition to the birthday/farewell celebrations, dance rock shows, and farmers markets I'll be attending, I am ecstatic about checking this out:

All day food, local crafts and arts, music and beers! I <3 San Francisco!

Rocking out solo

I buy tickets to go to shows by myself all the time. I have no problem with it because I go to rock out to good music, which can be done solo. How often do I actually end up going alone? Very very rarely. I always end up with last minute additions: people who ask me what I'm up to and I end up extending an invite to or people who hear of what I'm doing and invite themselves. I'm totally stoked for the company, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I actually look forward to spending quality time with just me and the music, in my own little world.

I feel the same way about a lot of activities actually: watching movies, going for runs, going to dance parties, etc....all things that people tend to enjoy doing with another person or a group. However, I find that oftentimes the reason I'd prefer to roll solo is because I have a bad case of Good Hostess Syndrome. If I invite someone to do something, I then feel the obligation to ensure they have a good time. If they are having fun, then I'm happy. If they're not, then I feel like a failure. Example: you invite someone to check out a band they've never heard of. You are having a fantastic time, yet your friend hates the music. In that scenario, I would then feel totally bummed that my friend wasn't enjoying themselves or having just a mediocre time.

Anyway, I used to always buy a pair of tickets to every show I wanted to go to. I don't do that anymore. If someone happens to be stoked about the same show then rad, they buy their ticket and we go enjoy good music together :-)

E-Words of Wisdom

My mom likes to forward me about a hundred ridiculous emails a day. Most of which are stupid jokes or motivational quotes. I generally erase most of them before even opening them, but today I randomly opened one that turned out to be a chain letter dedicated to National Girlfriends Day (which apparently, that's what today is so if you've got female friends, give them a hug) and amongst the flashing, brightly colored crap that littered the body of the message was a quote that stuck out:

"Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Love the ones who don't just because you can. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Kiss slowly. Forgive quickly. God never said life would be easy. He just promised it would be worth it."

All words I've heard before in one way or another. All things that are easier said than done, but all true nonetheless.

I'm Very Particular About What I Like

Many thanks to Mr. Vincent for sending this along my way. They are actual voicemails left by a guy as a result of this girl giving him her business card in a bar in San Francisco and saying "call me". This is INCREDIBLE.

Ex-Talk

J: so yeah, we are going to skydiving this Saturday
A: you and the new lady?
J: yes, I'm making lunch and surprising her, seriously, how romantic am I?!
A: surprising her with skydiving?
J: no, we scheduled the skydiving, but I'm making her lunch, all from scratch, and taking her to one of my favorite parks in Monterey
A:
man, will you be MY boyfriend someday? oh wait, you were for nearly 3 years already..
J: haha, one time is enough for any girl.....they can't handle my shit on two separate duties

Back That S%*! Up

Back in late 2006 my 60GB iPod Classic crashed. About half of it were CDs that I had spent hours importing into my iTunes (some of which I'd since deleted to make space on my teeny tiny 40GB hard drive). The other half was music I had gotten by other means, either bought off iTunes or acquired from various friends over the year I'd had it. Gone. All of it. Even now There is probably at least 10GB of music that has just disappeared as I know it because who really knows every album by every artist in their iPod? But now I'll NEVER know.

I had a panic attack this morning due to a spontaneous fear that my laptop was going to crash at any moment...taking all my photos and music to the great beyond with it. So I ran out after work and bought this beauty:

500GB of external hard drive loveliness. I will now spend the rest of my night backing up all my files like a crazed maniac...and loving every second.

Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust

The other day Joe left me a voicemail that simply said "I'm going to go to the art store and buy some supplies. Let's paint" and it dawned on me that I haven't painted in nearly two years. I don't paint anything in particular. I'm no artist. I like colors and I like the act of painting, it's very therapeutic. So last night while at my parents house in San Jose I got the urge to make something. This is what a made as a result of listening to Sigur Ros' new album from start to finish for the first time:

Weekend Mom-isms

Mom: Your hair is getting pretty long
Me: I know, I'm going to let it grow out for a little while
Mom: Your hair looked really good when it was short
Me: I know, I loved that haircut
Mom: Want me to cut it tomorrow?
Me: No, I said I wanted to let it grow out for a while
Mom: But you looked so much better with short hair! I just want you to look pretty!

Mom: Are you exercising? Your need to lose weight.

Mom: You know Sa, you're almost 25 and that's considered pretty old. You should be serious about looking for a husband
Me: Maybe I just don't want to get married Mom
Mom: No, that's unacceptable. You will get married.
Me: What if I never meet someone I'm compatible with?
Mom: You force it. You think married people actually like each other?

Sunday Updates

Last night a bunch of us ventured out to Royal City Avenue (RCA) to check out the main nightclub district. I was blown away. Bangkokians have seriously stepped it UP. We're talking heaps of really chic clubs and hordes of hip good-looking Thai people to go with it. Every single song the DJ played was spot on at the club we were at (Route 66). And the bathrooms were amazing! If I had the time, I'd write an entire post just about the bathrooms. Let's just say this: there were multiple rooms, one of which was a lounge with luxurious couches and had live music performances.

This is the bathroom

Danielle left Bangkok this morning to embark on an adventure to Koh Chang with an Aussie girl named Camille this morning. I'm stoked for her that she gets to go outside the city. It'd be a crying shame to come all the way to Thailand and only see Bangkok. As for me, I'm happy to just have a couple days to just enjoy my time off from work and do some last minute shopping before heading back to San Francisco on Tuesday morning.

Graviton

Last year when I spent three months in Bangkok, I stumbled upon this teeny music vendor in the Chatuchak Weekend Market that sold copies of really great indie, rock, pop, electro, folk, etc. It's a 6x8 ft space with just racks upon racks of CDs. There is only one copy of each album available and they are 100 Baht each. The guy who runs it a) knows everything about every album there and b) knows exactly where they're all located in the crazy mess. It's nuts. I popped by there practically every weekend when I wasn't backpacking outside the city to pick up new tunes. Which is how, despite being abroad for so long, I managed to stay ahead of the new music curve.

Soooooooo GUESS WHAT? I found it today. It took me well over an hour to find it in the maze of stalls, but I did it. This makes me master of the universe because anyone who has ever been to Chatuchak Market can tell you that it is nearly impossible to find the same store ever again because it is just that crazy, crowded and disorienting.

I ended up spending about two hours sitting on the only stool in the teeny tiny stall just shooting the shit with the owner while my stack of CDs-To-Get grew and chatting with other customers. Nothing makes me happier than knowing how many people like good music. I nerded out about bands with people from about a dozen different countries today. I am particularly blown away by how hip to the music scene the Thai youth is. I had a long conversation with an older Thai woman about how awesome Sigur Ros, Stars and Beulah were. Seriously? Most people in the US don't even know who any of those bands are!!! The one downside is that they were out of a few CDs I really wanted: the new The Music album, Lykke Li's full length album (still on import status in the US), The Fashion and the new The Cribs album. Bah. Oh well.

After my stack of CDs reached 31, I had to make myself leave. If I had zero self-control I would have definitely spent the rest of my money there. No joke. It was cool though because the store owner let me pick out an addition 4 CDs for free because a) I had bought so many and b) I essentially talked other customers into buying at least a few dozen albums combined.

Those two hours alone makes my day a complete success. If you ever find yourself in Bangkok, deifnitely hit up Gravitron @ Chatuchak Weekend Market, Section 3 Soi 43/1 (Yes, I took about 20 business cards to ensure I never forget where it is again)

Humidity + Heat

Thursday: Danielle's surgery was a complete success. She's a bit sore still, but things are healing quite nicely. Quiet night at dinner and the Suan Lum Night Bazaar before turning in early in an attempt for more sleep. Only got 3 hours. Fail.

Friday: Took a water taxi to the Grand Palace. Met up with Matt & Pat and grabbed lunch with them before they left to join their tour group to head down to southern Thailand *tear* D. and I both passed out completely as soon as we got back to Lub.D. We slept off/on from 6pm till 5:30am the next day.

Today: Woke up early and headed out for a girls day at Chatuchak Weekend Market. Lots and lots of people. Extreme heat. We got back about an hour ago and have all been catatonic since. I think I'm going to head out for a foot massage shortly.

aaaaand breathe...

Monday Night: ventured out with a few folks from the hostel (Owen, Luke, & Anna) to get some dinner and wander around Patpong (Red Light District), met up with Matt & Pat at the first bar of the evening. Went to my first Thai sex show, complete with ping pong balls and razor blades. Continued to get blind wasted at a bar/club with a great cover band. Passed out at the hostel around 4am. Owen, Luke, & Anna doing Blue Steel in Patpong

Tuesday: Woke up at 9am with the Worst Hangover of 2008. Went to Thantakit Dental Center for a consultation with Potential Dental Surgeon #2. Liked him, booked it. Barely survived the Worst Cab Ride ever before stumbling back into the hostel to nurse myself back to health throughout the rest of the day. That evening felt just good enough to for an "easy night out" with Hold-On-I-Brought-More-Dudes & Danielle. Gulliver's at Khao San, then walked the strip. Got everyone to try a deep fried cricket. Went to Spicy, the shadiest after-hours club on earth, complete with a 2-1 hooker ratio. Drinking and dancing continues. Get back to Lub D at 5am, only to discover D.'s wallet is gone. Immediate stress. Head back to Spicy, no wallet there. Contents of wallet: debit card, credit card, a lot of cash, & hostel key. Panic attacks, phone calls, and hours later we retreat to sleep at 7:30am Hold-On-I-Brought-More-Dudes on Khaosan Road

Wednesday: Awake at 10am. Hungover. Stress, phone calls and panic attacks continue. D.'s so sick I don't know what to do. While she rests, I venture out to MBK with Matt & Pat, my two new Reasons to Love The British. In complete zombie mode from so little sleep. Return to hostel, check on D. Things are progressing, slowing but surely. PS WaMu sucks ass for international mishaps. Head out with our Lub D Hold-On-I-Brought-More-British-People crew for a mellow, I repeat, mellow night out at a hooka bar. Strawberry hooka = win. Return to hostel, wide awake. Running on 2.5 hours of sleep still. Stay up to deal with The Wallet Debaucle. Finally, success! 24 hours later! Lay around watching Knocked Up with the homies. Still wide awake when it's over at 4am. Attempt to sleep.

Today: Wake up at 7:30am. Prepare to move rooms for a few nights. Conversation and laughs over breakfast in the lobby. Set off for D.'s surgery.

I'm currently writing this from the Thantakit Dental office as D. sits in a chair getting metal screwed into her jaw. They have a complimentary computer with hi-speed net access for customers. Hurrah!

I am so so so tired and completely awake at the same time. It's been an exhausting past first-half of the week. A lot of ups, a lot of downs. We're hoping with the surgery over with today, it'll be ups from here on out. We haven't had a chance to explore any of Bangkok yet and we're very eager to....although this afternoon we might attempt to get a proper sleep in since we're both operating on something like 15 hours of sleep total in the past 4 days.

Bangkok Day 1: Smile

Our first official day in Bangkok is coming to an end and I am completely exhausted because we: went to D.'s first dental appointment (which was a success), ate an amazing lunch at my favorite spot MK Restaurant, navigated our way through the mazes of Siam Square, swam through the crowds at MBK and walked for what seemed like miles and miles in sunny hotness...all on three hours of sleep and fighting (er, losing really...) a battle against jet lag.

Decompression was in the form of an hour long foot-head-shoulder massage combo (for me) and a full body traditional Thai massage (for D.). Oh, and it cost us 7 US$ each.

Currently, I'm abusing the free internet at Lub D Hostel yet again as it is pouring rain. I love it though. You just don't get weather like this in San Francisco. There is something extremely soothing about abusive weather.

It's WHAT time???

Upon arriving to our amazing hostel in Bangkok last night, D. and I immediately found ourselves getting drunk with other travelers and ended up passing out around 5am. When we woke up we checked the time and it said 5pm. An immediate freak out ensues because we were supposed to wake up at 8am to go to D.'s first dental appointment. How on earth could we have passed out for 12 hours?!?!?! I mean, we were pretty wasted but 12 HOURS???

We figured out minutes later that my iPod failed reset to the Bangkok time zone last night and still had California time on display. It was actually 7am.

We laughed at our stupidity for about 15 minutes straight.

It is sunny and hot as balls outside. The receptionist tells us this is the first day in weeks it hasn't been pouring rain. Guess we brought the sunshine with us =) Here's hoping it holds out for the next week or so!

Save Danielle!

Be there. Bring money.

Also, watching Josh and D. make this flier was one of the highlights of my evening. And yes, I did mention to them that there is nothing remotely Thai about the images. That's a Chinese Buddha. And D.'s got arms like Vishnu.

Real. Surreal.

I came upon the pictured 5-car collision on Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay literally 20 seconds after it happened. Apparently the Honda on the right was speeding and spun out of control and slammed into the Toyota on the left straight on. The driver of the Honda was instantly killed and the two passengers in the Toyota were badly injured and trapped in the metal wreck that minutes earlier was called a car. Miraculously, the other people involved walked away from their damaged cars unscathed.
I watched and prayed as the firetrucks and ambulances arrived to saves the lives of the people still trapped in the Toyota. A man was pulled from the passenger side, put onto a stretcher and given immediate attention only to be pronounced dead less than 20 minutes later and placed in a body bag. This man died right before my eyes. It was real. The woman in the driver's seat was completely trapped, but still alive. Over the course of the next half hour I watched as the firemen disassembled the car piece by piece so they could get her out. We were all shoo'd away from the accident scene just as they were making real progress to remove her, but she was confirmed to be alive.

On the ride home I kept thinking about how fragile our lives are. I thought about the "what ifs". What if we had driven just a little faster than we were? Could that have been us being airlifted away to the hospital in a helicopter? I thought about who those people were. Who was the driver and why was he driving so fast? Was he speeding for pure thrill or was he in a rush to get somewhere? Who were the man and woman in the other car? What was their relationship? Friends? Siblings? Married? What were they talking about when the collision occurred? Where were they going?

I found out later that afternoon that the two people in the Toyota were friends of friends of mine. It's strange to discover that we really all connected to each other some way. Their names are Cindy and Steve. They're from San Francisco and were dating. At the time of discussion Cindy was still alive, but her legs had been completely mangled in the wreck and had suffered damage to her spine as well.

My heart goes out to the victim's families and I am praying that Cindy makes it through this.

It's Booked!

Holy Shitballs! I got the Go Ahead from my superiors at Fort Mason! Danielle and I booked our tickets to go to Bangkok! It's official, we depart from SFO Saturday, June 28 and I will be returning on Tuesday, July 8. Crazy last minute international adventure, Batman!

Quick synopsis of the situation: Danielle got into a bicycling accident a few weeks back and needs to get dental implants. Her docs quoted her about $20,000...we got quote from the people in Thailand and it'll be about $7000. Soooo she's flying me out to accompany her on her dental tourism adventure because even with travel costs, it'll all still be significantly less than it would be here in the States.

Stressball Mode ensues: must figure out accommodation, financial situation, confirm & reconfirm appointments with dental people, must go fetch my passport in San Jose, must make sure everything is done and covered at Fort Mason.

This music video is currently ranked #1 on imeem.com. Really?! A Thai music video?! Go Thailand! Go! I think it helps that Nologo is smokin' hot. I think I've just discovered my first Thai pop star crush since the days of Dom.

Bike Porn

I've been wanting to build my own single speed/fixie bike for quite some time now, but haven't had the funds to actually move forward on it. Regardless, I've looked into what I want to build and how I want it to look. I decided a while back that I definitely want a lime-green frame with white rims. Originally I'd wanted to have a black seat and riser handlebars with white grip tape. When I mentioned that idea to my friends, they'd suggested that it might actually look better with a brown seat and cork grip tape. I was a little hesitant about the idea, but this past Saturday I saw THIS bike at the Ferry Building's Farmers Market and kind of fell in love. It's essentially the bike I want with my friends' suggestions included, but without riser handlebars.
How hot is this bike?!

Of course, I wouldn't build this exact bike since I was informed that all the elements that make up this particular bicycle probably total about 3K or so....which is so not in my price range. A girl can dream though...

RoboGames 2008

Just returned from the RoboGames 2008 in the Festival Pavilion here on the Fort Mason campus. Getting into on-campus events for free is definitely a perk of working here. The only other exposure I've had to any kind of robot competition is that one episode of CSI where someone got killed at an event like this. Regardless, it was a lot fun to watch. Also, mullets. There are a LOT of mullets.

Hamachi+Potatoes+Asparagus

Serious compliments to Chef Ydnar for crafting this ridiculously awesome dinner. Pan-seared sesame-crusted hamachi with pureed potatoes and grilled asparagus topped with grapefruit. Dude. YUM.

you're all I care about right now

I <3 this puppy. Hard. His name is Sinatra and he belongs to David, that lucky bastard.

He's a purebred "Fluffy" Pembrooke Welsh corgi with one blue eye (Hence, "Sinatra") and one brown. In this picture he is 11 weeks old. Most people are baffled by him because he looks like a cross between a raccoon and a bunny. Unbelievably cute.

Cajun Spiced Shrimp & Corn Salad

it. was. so. delicious. A hefty Thank You! to Chef David who whipped this bad boy up for dinner! Also, special thanks to Food & Wine Magazine for making easy to follow recipes :-)

You should definitely try making it yourself!

Bi(-Rite) Curious

Last night after some shop-hopping down Valencia Street with Jessica, we decided to make a quick detour to Bi-Rite Creamery since I'd never been before.

Let me just say this: I love ice cream. I would marry ice cream and have its children if it were physically and legally possible (first let's focus on Gay Marriage, THEN I'll start lobbying for gastronomic marriage). Anyway, that being said, I am no longer a Bi-Rite Virgin. I can now join the ranks of Bi-Rite Sluts all over San Francisco. My Cookie's 'N Cream was divine. Jessica's Brown Butter Pecan was to die for.

It's a good thing I don't live next door or else new work out regime would be a complete waste of time.

I Miss You

I have made a lot of friends in my life. I've also lost contact with a lot of people. I would say a good 90% of friendships lost I don't lose sleep over, however I was thinking about a few individuals today. People who'd been essentially cut out of my life due to various reasons and I find myself missing them.

It makes me happy to think about the fun times we had even if there won't be more. I know that there will always be new friends, but it's hard to accept sometimes that people come and go. People change. There comes a time when it just doesn't make sense to have certain people in your life anymore.....but I still miss them.

Gay.Dance.Party.

This happened as we were in the process of bringing our lovely weekend camping/climbing trip at Consumnes to an end.

Best Gay Dance Party. EVER.

Steve Aoki + DJ AM = <3

BFD 2008 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View would have been kiiiind of shitty if not for Steve Aoki and DJ AM. I cannot WAIT until one or both of them return to San Francisco for a proper dance party. Also, I finally got to see Alkaline Trio live after being in love with them since 1999. Oh, and Santogold is the shit. Stoked I got to see her perform since I missed her at Coachella. By the way, the South Bay reeks of douchebags. Great hairstyles on ze womenfolk though.

In other news: I <3 my BFFs. Hard.

I received this dress as a gift from my super awesome buddy Ydnar. It's from SkunkFunk in the Mission and it's kind of the cutest thing ever...although in this pic I'm trying it on over my tank top and jeans so I think it looks a tad funny... anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Another benefit of attending an Ivy League school...

So I just finished reading J.K. Rowling's commencement speech for the Harvard graduating class of 2008 and I'm absolutely floored. Everything she says makes perfect sense.

The full video and transcript of the speech can be found here.

I found the speech broken up into three parts on YouTube:

my own worst enemy

I have been slacking off hard on pretty much all aspects of my life recently and it's really frustrating. Ever since grade school I have found ways to avoid doing the things I should and need to be doing. It's amazing that I went K-12 with the reputation of the Smart One considering my GPA started doing landslides in 7th grade (my first C was in sewing class of all places). I masked those academic shortcomings by being really involved in student government, the school paper, and sports. Little known fact: my second semester of sophomore year in high school I "successfully" pulled off a report card with all letter grades represented, W included. I managed to snap out of it slightly for two years in community college so I could trick the admissions officers at UCLA into letting me in, but once I arrived it as back to the same old routine. Lots of late papers, lots of late night studying cram sessions at Powell, etc.

In school, the consequences of slacking off aren't that severe. You might screw your chances of landing a job at Google(who require a 3.0 GPA from college) or maybe not getting into the top tier graduate school, but it isn't the end of the world.

I have found myself in the "real world" working a "real job" now. It's strange, but it's where everyone ends up eventually after 16-20 years of being pent up in an educational institution. Here in the "real world" I can't get away with what I used to. I can't turn in a project late at work or fall behind on rent payments. Doing so will get me fired or evicted. Now I'm not remotely close to either, but I definitely haven't been pushing myself and to me that's frustrating.

I could be a superstar at work, but instead I'm just coasting by and sometimes fall a little behind. I could be in the best shape of my life, but I find myself opting to sit in front of the computer and chat online than going out for that evening run. I could be a cooking master, but I eat out instead. I could be learning a million things from the piles of unread books I've accumulated, but I end up flipping through the latest issue of Domino Magazine that's just arrived in the mail.

If I sound severely unhappy with where my life is I'm not, I'm actually really happy with my life. I'm just frustrated with my current underachieving state. I know what I'm capable of doing and that the possibilities is endless. I just need to step it up. They say the first step is always the hardest one.

And on that note, I'm going to go power through the pile of work that's decomposing on my desk. No time like the present, right?

Wanted

I cannot WAIT to see this. I'm such a sucker for a good action flick. Car chases, fight sequences, and sexy people? Sign me up. Plus, how hot does Ms. Jolie look in this?

Because...

I'm blogging because I'm bored. Because there always seems to be a million things I feel like telling to no one in particular. Because I have a LOT of free time as I sit in front of my computer at work. Because it's unlikely anyone will read it anyway. Because I haven't since I was 19. Because I'm a shitty writer and I'm out to prove it. Because it'll be interesting to have a public record of my thoughts and daily activities. Because it's free. Because I need more things to waste my time with. Because everybody's doing it. Because sometimes I just feel like writing.
